Metro SIG

Current Activities
The WCA's Metro SIG is currently partnering with groups such as SVASE and The Kelsey Group to address the ongoing question of profitability and management of metropolitan/municipal wireless networks. Recent examples of success such as the use of city-deployed networks for disaster response in the Minneapolis bridge collapse incident show the value of these networks; however the ongoing question of funding for capital expenditure and operations remains indeterminate.

About the WCA Metro SIG

The WCA's Metro SIG is a forum for discussion of all aspects related to the deployment of wireless broadband by municipalities and public entities. Monthly meetings are hosted at which speakers discuss key topics and active interchange between the speakers and audience is encouraged. Previous speakers have included key players from Google, Cisco, Hewlett Packard, Intel and many others.

Much has been written about cities and governments who are deploying or planning to deploy wireless broadband networks, however there remain many critical questions:

- What is the business model?
- Who pays for "free" service?
- What is the value of advertisement?
- Can you get something for nothing?

The answers to these questions will determine success or failure. The MetroSIG will soon launch a special website intended to promote communication between, and education of, Wireless ISPs.
