September 2001 Meeting
Notice
Date: Tuesday, September 18,
2001
Time: 4:00 PM - 6:30PM.
Location: Hewlett-Packard in CUPERTINO
19091 Pruneridge Ave, Cupertino, CA
Building 48S, Oak Room Auditorium
The WCA board expresses
our deepest sympathy to the victims, their families, and friends
of the unprovoked and senseless events resulting in these tragic
losses.
We have reconfirmed
with our speakers and we will hold our meeting as scheduled
This month, WCA will be exploring
two aspects of the industry: (1) wireless data from a Venture
Capital viewpoint and (2) the wireless LAN scenario from an
application viewpoint.
Both topics appear to be quite
timely in light of the existing focus of the industry. Our wireless
market look falls on the heels of CTIA
in San Diego, PCIA
in Los Angeles, and Networld+Interop
in Atlanta. The wireless LAN discussion will complement recent
analysts and industry experts sharing their respective views
on the Bluetooth Vs 802.11 debate. The 802.11 supporters will
gather in Santa Clara in early October (see
special deal for WCA attendees below),
and the BlutoothSIG will converge on Moscone Center in early
December. Quite an active time for conferences in the wireless
space!
WirelessLAN
vs. Bluetooth, Matthew Graney, Product Marketing
Manager Americas, Telelogic.
Recent media surrounding 802.11
Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have painted them as being locked
in fierce competition with each other. But, is that really
the case? This presentation will take a look at the differences
between the older and wiser 802.11 and Bluetooth, the promising
contender, both in terms of their technology as well as the
importance areas of conformance and interoperability testing.
It will also speculate on the future of the alphabet soup
of 802.11standards and whether Bluetooth can deliver on the
hype.
Investment
Opportunities in Wireless Data - A Venture Capitalist's Perspective
, Neeraj Bharadwaj, Principal , Patricof & Co.Ventures,
Inc.
Mr. Bharadwa joined Patricof
in 1999 and he makes investments in wireless, mobile Internet
and enterprise software companies. He has been involved
with investments in Webraska (traffic/mapping platform for
wireless applications), UPOC (messaging platform for wireless
networks), Mesh Networks (ad hoc networking/routing software
for wireless networks), Oblix (extranet access management
solution),eMation (non-PC/device OSS), and Synchrony (eCRM
ASP). He will present an overview of the wireless data market
in the US including reasons for its limited success to date.
He will then outline viable investment opportunities in
the near term followed by venture capital outlook for wireless
data. The emphasis will be on the USPDA/ mobile market and
industry, with some factoids on Japan.
