Chapter Meeting

Greg Nadari, Frost & Sullivan presented "Wireless LANs: A Market Overview."

The wireless local area network (WLAN) market is on the verge of an exciting expansion. The passage of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN standard, a rise in end-user awareness, and consumer education has intensified interest and competition. Greg covered the three most common WLAN technology platforms: Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS), Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS), and Infrared Beam (IR). He discussed the drivers, restraints, challenges/opportunities, and trends. Greg concluded with examples of products from many of the most prominent wireless vendors.

Chapter Meeting

Dewayne Hendricks, Com21 presented: "What's up with Ultrawide Band (UWB) Technology"

Last August, the FCC initiated a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) (98-153) to seek input on proposed changes to Part 15 of FCC regulations to allow the deployment of a new class of devices which use a technology now called "Ultrawide Band" (UWB). Since the NOI process concluded earlier this year, intense interest has been generated with regards to UWB in both the media and technology communities. Dewayne shared his thoughts on just what UWB is and why you should care about its deployment and growth. The major stumbling block to that today is the FCC regulatory process.
