The January meeting of the Wireless Communications Alliance (WCA) took place Tuesday, 1/21, at 4:00 PM at Hewlett-Packard in Santa Clara.
The WCA, a nonprofit corporation, is dedicated to the mutual benefit of area companies and organizations involved in wireless communications technologies.
Ed Spivak of Absolute Time Corporation presented: "GPS Synchronization of Wireless Networks".
He gave an overview of the Global Positioning System and its application to time and frequency monitoring. Application of GPS to wireless systems (TDMA, CDMA, and GSM) was described as well as why GPS is the best choice and why it is needed. Ed explained how GPS can be used to help meet new FCC rules on location identification for enhanced 911 service. He provided a comparison of synchronization costs for GPS vs. alternatives.
Vladimir Kraz of Wise Medical Systems spoke on "The Design of a Hand-held Wireless Computer for Medical Applications".
He described the design path, challenges, and technical solutions for this computer that is a foundation of a mobile clinical information system. It contains a 2.4 GHz spread-spectrum radio, touchscreen, audio processor, etc. Data throughput, battery life, weight, user's interface, and other factors defined the computer's design. Vladimir also covered safety measures implemented for Lithium-Ion batteries.
