WCA August 1997 Meeting

The August meeting of the Wireless Communications Alliance (WCA) was held Tuesday, 8/19, at 4:00 PM at Hewlett-Packard in Santa Clara.

The WCA, a nonprofit corporation, is dedicated to the mutual benefit of area companies and organizations involved in wireless communications technologies.

Gregg Levin, VP and General Manager at Multipoint Networks, spoke on "Wireless Access Routers".

A new category of product, the wireless access router, is addressing the needs of businesses that need metropolitan area Internet or intranet connectivity in regions where dedicated wireline solutions are either unavailable, too costly, or unreliable. The talk described the market environment that created the needs for such a solution, the alternatives in use today, and Multipoint Network's answer to these requirements. Gregg described how design tradeoffs were made in order to best meet market requirements.

John Ledahl, Director of Wireless Programs for Dataquest, titled his presentation: "Cellular and PCS Attack the Consumer Market with Digital Offerings".

John provided an overview of the cellular and PCS industries with insights into the leading technologies, standards, and market practices in each segment. Of particular interest were the sizing of the markets and the choosing of top ten winners and losers, as well as Dataquest's prediction of key issues and market trends.
