WCA September 1996 Meeting

The September meeting of the Wireless Communications Alliance (WCA) took place Wednesday, September 18, at Hewlett Packard in Santa Clara.

The WCA, a nonprofit corporation, is dedicated to the mutual benefit of area companies and organizations involved in wireless communications technologies.

Ira Kane, Wireless Local Loop Marketing at Stanford Telecom, spoke on: "Integrated VSAT Wireless Local Loops for Rural Telephony".

Many towns in developing nations have inadequate or no phone service. Ira described an integrated VSAT/Wireless local loop system which provides local interconnections to phones using orthogonal CDMA technology. Each regional wireless local loop is connected to a gateway terminal in a city using VSATs.

Michele Farquhar, Chief of the Wireless Communications Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission, spoke on: "The FCC's Plans and Priorities for Wireless Communications".

Ms. Farquhar focused on the Bureau's five priorities for the next 6 months:

-- Develop a Comprehensive Spectrum Management Policy
-- Plan and Implement Auctions Effectively and Efficiently
-- Remove Barriers to Entry
-- Promote Access and Other Public Interest Goals
-- Continue to Implement Streamlining Initiatives

She outlined specific rulemakings and other efforts in these areas. She also talked about what the wireless industry could look like in 5 years and how the FCC is trying to affect that vision.
